Constellated Space: Front Door Gallery
2011
4:42 minute video documentation of muralized gallery
University of Nevada, Reno

Documentation of the painting installation, "Constellated Space," part of Jeremy Stern's MFA thesis exhibition "Following," on view March 7 - 11, 2011 at the University of Nevada, Reno's three gallery spaces: The Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery, the Walter McNamara Gallery, and the Front Door Gallery. This video shows the gallery in daytime and night lighting conditions, as well as an active space in the university.

Painting of the full piece spanned the 5 walls of the Sheppard, the 3 walls of the adjacent Walter McNamara Gallery, and 4 walls in the Front Door Gallery, and took place the two weeks prior to the exhibition (March 7 - 11, 2011). Each volunteer was responsible for determining a small portion of the final "look" of the piece. Collaborators were asked to pay attention to the white walls of the gallery and circle any irregularities, such as still-visible repairs from previous exhibitions, in a nearly-black, midnight blue-green color ("Deep Space" commercially available through Behr) - creating a loose map of the gallery's history, as it is still visible in its otherwise smooth surface. Part of the Front Door Gallery was the original art gallery for the university before additions were made to the building and the gallery was divided into additional theater and office spaces. Because it holds this 51 year history, portions of the wall are incredibly pocked, making for a more textured map.
